EthTrader (DONUT)

From CryptoWiki

 Basics

History

  • From this interview with the founding mod (11-9-2020):

"I started r/ethtrader because in the early days there seemed a need to separate off price speculation and discussion from r/ethereum. Then the community grew significantly throughout 2017 bull market which is when I proposed to do a token distribution to sub members based on karma. A few months later there was some code and at that point had also become about building a DAO. As the experiment evolved I wanted to widen the access to participation across the Reddit-Ethereum ecosystem and renamed the project RECDAO, for Reddit Ethereum Community DAO. A number of interesting developments came from this project, like vote_weight = min(transferable, non_transferable), the curator, and automatic vote extension. I learned a lot about Ethereum dev but did not spend much time promoting the project within the community — I thought it would struggle because it depended on external websites and a browser plugin for interaction.

In 2018 I completed a Reddit mod survey and this developed into continued dialogue with a Reddit project manager. An internal Reddit R&D team were interested in developing a subreddit specific point system and using it to have polls and governance within the sub, for tipping, and buying badges. They wanted to start with a centralised version but were familiar with Ethereum and my previous work. The plan was always to eventually port to Ethereum. I was fully on board to help them experiment within r/ethtrader. Porting to Ethereum took off in early 2019. It was the responsibility of the daonuts project, which I led, to provide the Ethereum side of the system which Reddit would create an interface to. Following development that took up most of the year the mainnet dao and donuts were launched in December of 2019."

Token

Launch

  • From this interview (11-9-2020):

"Unlike the testnet Reddit tokens that are not tradable yet, donuts can be traded on some exchanges and also is listed on Uniswap, and users can claim their donuts monthly through its own EthTrader DAO on Aragon. In the first two weeks of August, donut’s price has gone up 7 times and as per an article on Medium, the top users are able to earn $3,000 per month by just interacting with the community."

Layer Two

  • From this interview (11-9-2020):

"We are waiting to see what the results of the Reddit Scaling Bake-off are. While the implementation of donuts differs from the more recent internal Reddit implementation of community points on Ethereum, it may make sense to try and use the same solution. The submissions have various tradeoffs. The security of the zkrollup solutions is basically L1. That said they don’t yet offer the level of extensibility as the evm based solutions. I would like to see development and experimentation on top of the base community points protocol so this extensibility would be crucial."
