Before the Scroll token airdrop went live, wallets were found with abnormally large allocations, and those being wallets owned by founders (18-10-2024). When the claiming happened, more was uncovered, with the top 1% getting 62% of allocation, top 100 wallets 30% allocation (22-10-2024).

How it works
"Scroll's ZK-EVM project is building toward a Type 2 (fully EVM-equivalent) ZK-EVM, as is Polygon Hermez. That said, neither project is quite there yet; in particular, a lot of the more complicated precompiles have not yet been implemented. Scroll and Polygon are both Type 3 (almost EVM-equivalent) in their current forms, though they're expected to improve compatibility over time."

Cog Finance was the first to publicly announce launching on mainnet 1 day after Scroll went live.
Competition
"Scroll's ZK-EVM project is building toward a Type 2 (fully EVM-equivalent) ZK-EVM, as is Polygon Hermez. That said, neither project is quite there yet; in particular, a lot of the more complicated precompiles have not yet been implemented. Scroll and Polygon are both Type 3 (almost EVM-equivalent) in their current forms, though they're expected to improve compatibility over time. Polygon has a unique design where they are ZK-verifying their own internal language called zkASM, and they interpret ZK-EVM code using the zkASM implementation. Despite this implementation detail, I would still call this a genuine Type 3 ZK-EVM; it can still verify EVM code, it just uses some different internal logic to do it."
"While other competitors such as zkSync and Polygon are developing zkEVM’s, a factor that may allow Scroll to be competitive with these projects is that it aims to be EVM-equivalent. This means that contracts deployed on Ethereum mainnet can be ported over to Scroll without needing to make any material changes to the codebase. This should help catalyze adoption of Scroll, because it greatly increases the ease at which projects can migrate over to the network. "
- StarkWare and Matter Labs can be seen as Scroll's closest competitors — both use the zk-rollup scaling technique. From The Block (21-4-2022)
"When asked what Scroll's unique advantage over StarkWare is, Peng said, "we are building a zkEVM solution as opposed to StarkWare's zkVM. That means developers in the Scroll ecosystem will enjoy an 'EVM [[[Ethereum]] Virtual Machine] equivalent' experience; any dapp that runs on zk Layer 1 can be deployed on Scroll," she said. As for Matter Labs’ zkSync network, it also has EVM compatibility like Scroll, but Scroll is more developer-friendly, according to Peng."
Pros and Cons
Pros
Cons
- Is centralized, as the team stopped finalization after an exploit (7-2024).
Team, Funding and Partners
Team
- Full team can be found here.
- Sandy Peng, Ye Zhang and Haichen Shen; co-founders
- From The Block (21-4-2022):
"The current headcount of Scroll is 20 and the project is looking to hire several people across different functions, including engineering and operations, said Peng."
Funding
- INTMAX; Scroll was part of their $5M seed round (13-3-2023). Also became partners.
- From The Block (21-4-2022):
"Scroll has raised $30 million in Series A funding. Scroll said Polychain Capital led the funding, with Bain Capital Crypto, Robot Ventures, Geometry DAO and others participating. Several angel investors, including the Ethereum Foundation's Ying Tong and Carlos Aria, and members of the Ethereum community, including Anthony Sassal, Ryan Adams and Santiago Santos, also joined the round. Scroll co-founder Sandy Peng declined to comment on whether the funding was raised via an equity round or a simple agreement for future tokens (SAFT) sale. The Series A round brings Scroll's total funding to date to around $33 million. The project has previously raised about $3 million from angel investors, Peng said."
