Aims to become a sharded blockchain (28-3-2023)

History

"The original intent was to add smart contract functionality to Phore by adding a smart contract sidechain. After looking more deeply into the idea, we decided the sidechain concept was not secure enough, or scalable, and it would be much better to build a new blockchain that had all of the properties we wanted for scalability, flexibility, and functionality. As this new blockchain (originally codenamed Synapse) took form, we realized that what we were building was capable of much more than just adding smart contract functionality. Phore had taken on an identity focused around eCommerce and other decentralized applications, and it became clear that this new blockchain should be launched as its own project. Thus, we decided that Phore would continue building out its vision, and we would launch Graphene as a new project. Because the development of Graphene was partially funded by Phore development funds, Graphene would be airdropped to Phore holders."

Bugs/Exploits

Governance

Admin Keys

DAO

  • Nothing is live yet, but from their Litepaper (26-11-2021):

"Graphene is designed to have built-in decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) features. Shard governance guides the growth and development of the new types of shard blockchains added to the Graphene platform, and again the community has direct influence over which new shard types are approved and enabled."

Notable Governance Votes

Treasury

  • Nothing is live yet, but from their Litepaper (26-11-2021):

"Decentralized budget governance allows anyone in the Graphene community to submit funding proposals and the community has a direct say in allocating that sustainable development funding."

Token

Launch

"No premines, no external fundraising."

This is misleading, since in their Litepaper (26-11-2023):

"The Graphene development team is receiving their coins the same way, and we estimate the team holds less than 10% of the total supply".

And "the development of Graphene was partially funded by Phore development funds"

Plus, the top 6 holders on its BNB token deployment are all contracts. These are what are called premines.

How it works

According to their website (28-3-2023), Graphene will have a Beacon Chain which handes all PoS and validator registration tx. It acts as the “main” network chain that links all of the Graphene shards together as one integrated blockchain ecosystem. It also will comprise of validator modules, these interact with the beacon module and are what produce blocks for the beacon chain. They also handle the user part of proof-of-stake functions. Slashing is implied.

Other components are the relayer module which is the data management portion of the system — keeps track of the entire state of each shard. Relayers package up transactions to be submitted to the network, and advertise these packages to validators. Validators can then ensure that the packages validate without needing to keep track of the entire history of the shard.

Shard modules act as the “executor” for all of the side-chains. It executes the code for the side-chains and keeps them in sync with the beacon chain.

And lastly there are cross-links. These are a form of checkpoint that occurs in blocks when there is enough consensus across the Graphene network to finalize the block. Cross-links are used to finalize transactions that involve more than one shard, so they are used when moving balances from an address on one shard to an address on another shard.

  • From their Litepaper (26-11-2021): "Graphene will use the Gasper protocol."
  • From their blog (8-3-2021):

"Graphene is a Blockchain architecture that makes use of [[[sharding]] technology] and the CASPER staking consensus protocol."
