"In game theory, a focal point (also called Schelling point) is a solution that people will tend to use in the absence of communication, because it seems natural, special, or relevant to them."

Relevant in Crypto when it comes to having multiple implementations of blockchain clients. Having different implementations is crucial to decentralisation of the development level of the blockchain, but can cause (unintentional) hard forks. However, there are strong incentives to remain compatible with the other (competing) implementations. This can be described as a shelling point.
